Long Museum West Bund (龙美术馆西岸馆)
Premier Contemporary Chinese Art by the Huangpu
Overview
Long Museum West Bund is the heavyweight of Shanghai's contemporary art scene. Founded by billionaire collectors Liu Yiqian and Wang Wei (who also own the Pudong branch), the West Bund flagship opened in 2014 on a former coal wharf — 33,000 sqm of "umbrella vault" architecture by Atelier Deshaus: concrete arches spanning column-free galleries, a subterranean level carved into the riverbank, and a rooftop sculpture garden facing the Huangpu. The collection — 300+ works on rotation from their 1,000+ piece holdings — spans contemporary Chinese stars (Zhang Xiaogang, Yue Minjun, Zeng Fanzhi), modern masters (Xu Beihong, Lin Fengmian, Pan Yuliang), and traditional ink/voice pieces. It's not a survey museum; it's a collector's vision made spatial.
I've visited four times for major exhibitions — the "Re-View" opening show (300+ works, 200+ artists), the 2026 "Flow" New Year exhibition (80 pieces, modern/contemporary dialogue), and two solo shows. The space dictates the experience: the vaults create cathedral-like volume for large-scale installations, the river light shifts the work hourly, and the lack of columns means curators can place massive pieces freely. It's the only place in Shanghai where you consistently see museum-quality contemporary Chinese art without the crowds of Shanghai Museum or the commerciality of gallery districts. Admission varies by exhibition.
Architecture & Layout
- Umbrella Vaults (Signature): 30m-span concrete arches, no columns, natural light from clerestories. Galleries feel expansive yet intimate.
- B1 Riverside Level: Carved into the Huangpu riverbank, 8m ceiling, site-specific installations, direct river views through glass wall.
- 1F-2F Main Galleries: Rotating exhibitions, permanent collection highlights, sculpture court.
- Rooftop Garden: Huangpu-facing, large-scale sculptures, skyline views (Oriental Pearl, Tower). Open weather-permitting.
- Cafe & Bookshop: Design-focused, art books, catalogues, decent coffee (~¥40).
Collection Highlights (Rotating)
- Contemporary Stars: Zhang Xiaogang "Bloodline" portraits, Yue Minjun "Execution" laughing figures, Zeng Fanzhi "Mask" series, Liu Wei abstract cityscapes.
- Modern Masters: Xu Beihong horses, Lin Fengmian ladies, Pan Yuliang nudes, Wu Guanzhong landscapes — bridging tradition and modernity.
- Traditional Ink/Calligraphy: Rotating scrolls, fan paintings, seal carvings — contextualizes contemporary practice.
- International: Occasional Western works (Basquiat, Koons, Hirst) from the collectors' global holdings.

Local Pro-Tips

- Check exhibition schedule before going. Some shows are contemporary-heavy, others traditional. Website/WeChat "龙美术馆" has current lineup.
- Allow 2-3 hours. The vaults demand slow looking. B1 riverside level alone deserves 45 min.

- Combine with West Bund corridor: Century Park (Line 11, 2 stops), Yuz Museum (contemporary, 15 min walk), Tank Shanghai (renovated oil tanks, art), West Bund Art Center. Full art day.
- Bookshop: Excellent catalogues, artist monographs, Chinese art history. Prices fair, selection deep.
- Cafe: Overpriced but the river view justifies it. ~¥80 for coffee + pastry.
