Shanghai Museum (上海博物馆)
World-Class Chinese Art — Two Branches, One Collection
Overview
Shanghai Museum is, simply, one of the world's great museums of Chinese art. The collection — over 1 million pieces, 120,000 on display — spans bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, painting, jade, sculpture, furniture, coins, seals, and minority nationality arts. The bronzes alone (Shang-Zhou dynasties, 1600-256 BCE) are worth the trip: ritual vessels of staggering sophistication, some weighing hundreds of kilograms, cast with precision that modern foundries struggle to replicate. The ceramics trace the full arc from Neolithic pottery to Qing porcelain. The calligraphy gallery rotates Tang-Song masterpieces that make you understand why Chinese scholars spent lifetimes copying them.
Here's the 2026 situation: the museum now operates two branches. The original People's Square building (round top, square base — "heaven is round, earth is square") is undergoing phased gallery closures for renovation through 2026. The new Shanghai Museum East (opened 2024, Pudong) is the main showpiece now — 46,000 sqm, 1,000+ artifacts on display, state-of-the-art displays, and a striking glass atrium. Both are free for individual visitors with valid ID. Groups of 20 or more should reserve in advance. Do not skip this museum.

Local Pro-Tips
- Book group/special-exhibition slots as soon as your dates firm up. Individual visitors can enter with valid ID; groups of 20+ should set an alarm for 9:55 AM and refresh at 10:00 AM.
- Go East Branch first. It's the better experience. If you have energy, shuttle to People's Square for bronzes.
- Audio guide is worth ¥40. Curator commentary, not just labels. Available in English, Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish.
- Allocate 3 hours minimum. Serious visitors spend 4-5. The ceramics alone deserve 90 min.
- Light sensitivity: Calligraphy/painting galleries are dim. If you need bright light to read, bring a small flashlight (allowed).
- Luggage: Lockers at both branches (free, passport deposit). Large bags not allowed in galleries.
- Combine East Branch with: Shanghai Tower (Line 16, 2 stops) or Oriental Pearl Tower (Line 2, 4 stops).
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings (Tue-Fri 10-12): Quietest, best light in galleries, easiest reservations.
Avoid: Weekends, Chinese holidays, summer vacation (Jul-Aug) — booked solid, crowded galleries.
