Xintiandi (新天地)
Shikumen Heritage Meets Modern Lifestyle
Overview
Xintiandi ("New Heaven and Earth") is a paradox that works. In the early 2000s, developers preserved a block of Shikumen (stone-gate) lane houses — the distinctive Shanghai hybrid of Western terrace and Chinese courtyard — and turned it into a pedestrianized dining, shopping, and entertainment district. The facades are original; the interiors are modern. Starbucks sits in a 1920s courtyard house. The Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party (1921) is a museum at the center. It's sanitized history, yes, but the architecture is genuine, the atmosphere is lively, and it's one of the few places in central Shanghai where you can sit outdoors with a beer under plane trees.
I come here for two things: the architecture walk and the evening energy. Daytime, the lanes are quiet enough to appreciate the brickwork, the stone gate frames, the carved lintels. Nighttime, the lanterns come on, the tables spill into the lanes, and it feels like the cosmopolitan Shanghai of the 1930s — minus the warlords and opium. Purists call it a theme park. I call it the only place where my parents (who want comfort) and my friends (who want cocktails) both have a good time.
North Block vs South Block
Xintiandi splits into two distinct zones across Madang Road:
- North Block (Xintiandi Proper): The restored lanes — Shikumen facades, high-end boutiques, international restaurants, the CPC Congress museum. Polished, touristy, expensive.
- South Block (Xintiandi Style): Modern architecture, open plaza, younger brands, more casual dining, better happy hours. Where locals actually hang out.
Key Sites
- Site of the First National Congress of the CPC (中共一大会址): Preserved Shikumen house where 13 delegates met in 1921. Free entry, passport required, queues on weekends. Exhibition in Chinese/English.
- Shikumen Open House Museum (石库门博物馆): Reconstructed 1920s middle-class family home — furniture, layout, daily life artifacts. ~¥20, worth it for the architecture nerd.
- Madang Road pedestrian bridge: Connects North/South blocks. Good view of the lane roofscape.
- Xintiandi Mall (underground): Connects to Metro Line 10/13. Shopping, food court, supermarket.
Dining & Nightlife
High-end: The Kitchen (Western, brunch famous), Canton 8 (Cantonese, Michelin), Paulaner Brauhaus (German, beer hall), Din Tai Fun (reliable dim sum).
Mid-range: Maomaochong (Chinese fusion), Element Fresh (healthy bowls), various cafes with outdoor seating.
Bar scene: The Captain Bar (cocktails), Rugby Bar (expat staple), rooftop options in summer. Gets loud post-10 PM.
Access & Tickets
Area entry: Free, open 24/7 (individual venues have hours).
CPC Congress Museum: Free, 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:00), closed Mondays. Passport for entry.
Shikumen Museum: ~¥20, 9:00-17:00.
Metro: Line 10 or 13 to Xintiandi (新天地), Exit 3 or 6 — direct underground mall connection.
Walking: 10 min from People's Square (Line 1/2/8) south along Madang Road.
Local Pro-Tips
- Weekday lunch: Business crowd, easier reservations, some set menus ~¥100-150.
- Happy hour (5-8 PM): Most bars do buy-one-get-one or ¥50-80 cocktails. South Block better value.
- Architecture walk: Enter North Block from Madang Road, wander lanes counterclockwise, exit to South Block via bridge. 30 min for photos without crowds if you go 10 AM.
- Avoid Friday/Saturday 7-10 PM if you hate crowds. Tables booked solid, lanes packed.
- Combine with: French Concession walking route — Xintiandi is the northern anchor. Walk south to Sinan Mansions, Wukang Road, Tianzifang.
- Underground mall: Clean toilets, supermarket (City Shop - imported goods), Metro access without surfacing.
Best Time to Visit
Spring/Autumn evenings: Plane trees leafed out or golden, outdoor seating perfect.
Weekday 10 AM-12 PM: Architecture photography, empty lanes, good light.
Weekend nights: Maximum energy, but book dinner 2+ weeks ahead for popular spots.
