Xintiandi (新天地)

Shikumen Heritage Meets Modern Lifestyle

Xintiandi restored Shikumen lane houses with outdoor dining and modern architecture

Overview

Xintiandi ("New Heaven and Earth") is a paradox that works. In the early 2000s, developers preserved a block of Shikumen (stone-gate) lane houses — the distinctive Shanghai hybrid of Western terrace and Chinese courtyard — and turned it into a pedestrianized dining, shopping, and entertainment district. The facades are original; the interiors are modern. Starbucks sits in a 1920s courtyard house. The Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party (1921) is a museum at the center. It's sanitized history, yes, but the architecture is genuine, the atmosphere is lively, and it's one of the few places in central Shanghai where you can sit outdoors with a beer under plane trees.

I come here for two things: the architecture walk and the evening energy. Daytime, the lanes are quiet enough to appreciate the brickwork, the stone gate frames, the carved lintels. Nighttime, the lanterns come on, the tables spill into the lanes, and it feels like the cosmopolitan Shanghai of the 1930s — minus the warlords and opium. Purists call it a theme park. I call it the only place where my parents (who want comfort) and my friends (who want cocktails) both have a good time.

North Block vs South Block

Xintiandi splits into two distinct zones across Madang Road:
