Former French Concession (法租界)
Plane Trees, Art Deco, and Shanghai's Best Cafe Culture
Overview
The Former French Concession (1849-1943) is not a single attraction — it's a vibe spread across 10+ square kilometers of central Shanghai. Plane trees (platanus × acerifolia) form green tunnels over Wukang Road, Anfu Road, Huaihai Road, and dozens of side lanes. Behind them: Art Deco apartments, Spanish-style villas, Russian Orthodox churches, shikumen lane houses, and the densest concentration of excellent cafes in mainland China. It's where Shanghai's creative class lives, works, and brunches. You don't "visit" the French Concession; you wander it, ideally with no plan and a high caffeine tolerance.
I've spent entire weekends here just walking. Start at Xintiandi (north anchor), drift south through Sinan Mansions, up Wukang Road to the Wukang Building (Normandie Apartments), across to Anfu Road for lunch, down to Tianzifang, loop back via Fuxing Park. Every street has a story: the building where Zhou Enlai lived, the villa where Soong Ching-ling wrote, the cafe where Eileen Chang might have sat. The architecture is remarkably intact — the Japanese didn't bomb this district, and the Cultural Revolution's wrecking balls mostly missed it. What you see is largely 1920s-30s Shanghai.
Key Streets & Landmarks
- Wukang Road (武康路): 1.17 km, 372 plane trees, the iconic Normandie/Wukang Building (1924, French Renaissance, ship-shaped). Cafes, boutiques, photo queues at the building corner.
- Anfu Road (安福路): Parallel to Wukang, wider, more restaurants/bars, less touristy. The Press (cocktails), various brunch spots, concept stores.
- Huaihai Road (淮海路): The commercial spine — luxury flagships (Chanel, Dior), historic Park Hotel (1934, once Asia's tallest), former Cathay Cinema.
- Sinan Mansions (思南公馆): 51 restored garden villas (1920s), now hotels, restaurants, consulates. Quiet, green, upscale. Good for a cocktail at The Kitchen.
- Fuxing Park (复兴公园): French-style formal gardens, rose garden, open-air ballroom dancing (mornings), Marx/Engels statues, weekend antique market.
- Wukang Building (武康大楼): 1924, Laszlo Hudec design, triangular wedge like a flatiron. Iconic photo spot — visit 8 AM for empty shots.
