Century Park (世纪公园)
Shanghai's Largest Urban Green Escape
Overview
Century Park is where Shanghai breathes. At 140 hectares (346 acres), it's the city's largest park — a reclaimed wetland turned into lakes, lawns, forests, and gardens at the eastern end of Metro Line 2. No admission fee, no turnstiles, just swipe your metro card at the gate and you're in. Locals come for morning tai chi, weekend family cycling, kite flying, bird photography, and the simple luxury of grass underfoot. Tourists often skip it for the Bund or Disneyland, which means you'll share the space mostly with residents living their best park life.
I've spent many Saturday mornings here renting a tandem bike (¥40/hour), circling the 4.6 km main loop, stopping at the pigeon plaza where hundreds of birds descend on seed-bearing seniors, picnicking on the great lawn with convenience store onigiri and iced tea. It's not a "sight" — it's a pace. The metropolitan pressure drops. The skyline (Oriental Pearl, Shanghai Tower) frames the western horizon, a reminder of where you are, but the plane trees, ginkgos, and metasequoias create a genuine canopy. In autumn, the ginkgo avenue turns gold and the photography crowd arrives. In spring, cherry blossoms and tulips. Summer brings lotus on the lakes. Winter brings migratory birds.

Local Pro-Tips
- Rent a bike. Walking 140 hectares is a slog. The loop is flat, scenic, and 30 min by bike lets you cover ground for spontaneous stops.
- Weekday morning (8-10 AM): Tai chi groups, bird song, empty paths, best light. Weekend 10 AM+ = families, couples, photographers.
- Bring picnic supplies. 7-Eleven/FamilyMart at metro station (Exit 3). No full restaurants inside — snack kiosks only (drinks, ice cream, corn on cob).
- Bird photography: 400mm+ lens, NE sanctuary, early morning. Winter migrants (Nov-Mar) best variety.
- Autumn ginkgo (late Nov): Go weekday 9-11 AM. Weekend = tripod forest. The avenue is 500m — walk it slowly.
- Combine with: Shanghai Museum East (Line 16, 2 stops), Shanghai Tower (Line 2, 4 stops), Oriental Pearl Tower (Line 2, 6 stops).
- Toilets: Clean, marked on park map (at metro exits, lake pavilions, children's area). Carry tissue.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (Mar-May): Cherry blossoms (late Mar), tulips (Apr), azaleas (May), pleasant temps.
Autumn (Oct-Nov): Ginkgo gold (late Nov), maple red, clear skies, best cycling weather.
Summer: Lotus blooms (Jul-Aug), hot/humid, afternoon thunderstorms — go morning/evening.
Winter: Migratory birds, bare trees reveal skyline, fewer people, brisk cycling.
