Zhujiajiao Water Town (朱家角)
1,700-Year-Old Canal Town — Metro Line 17 Direct
Overview
Zhujiajiao ("Zhu Family Corner") is the most accessible of Shanghai's water towns — 48 km west in Qingpu District, now the terminus of Metro Line 17. Founded in the Yuan Dynasty (1200s), flourished in Ming-Qing as a rice and textile hub. Today: 36 stone bridges (the iconic Fangsheng Bridge has 5 arches), canals lined with whitewashed, black-tiled buildings, narrow lanes where residents still live, and enough tourists to support a thriving snack economy but not so many that you can't find a quiet canal corner. It's not a theme park — people live here, dry laundry over the water, sell vegetables from boats. That authenticity is why it works.
I've done Zhujiajiao as a half-day from central Shanghai (Line 17, 50 min door-to-door) and as a full-day with a private boat. The half-day hits the highlights: Fangsheng Bridge, Kezhi Garden, North Street snacks, a short boat ride. The full day lets you drift the side canals, visit the lesser temples, eat a proper lakeside lunch, and catch the late afternoon light on the bridges. Both are valid. The metro access makes the half-day a no-brainer for tight schedules.
Key Sights
- Fangsheng Bridge (放生桥): 5-arch stone bridge (1571), the icon. "Release life" bridge — Buddhists buy fish/turtles to release here. Best photo: from the canal boat passing under.
- Kezhi Garden (课植园): Largest garden in town (Ming Dynasty), rockeries, pond, pavilions, lotus in summer. ~¥20 entry. Quiet corner away from main streets.
- North Street (北大街): Main commercial lane — snacks, crafts, souvenirs. Crowded but the food is good: zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), fermented tofu, rice cakes.
- City God Temple (城隍庙): Active Taoist temple, incense, fortune sticks. Small but atmospheric.
- Post Office (朱家角邮局): 1903 Qing Dynasty building, still operating. Send a postcard with the special Zhujiajiao postmark.
- Qing Dynasty Canal: The main waterway — boat tours depart from multiple piers.
Boat Rides (Essential)
Two main options:
- Short ride (手摇船, hand-rowed): ~¥120-150/boat (up to 6 people), 15-20 min. Covers main canal + under Fangsheng Bridge. Most popular. Negotiate at pier.
- Long ride (电瓶船, electric): ~¥200-300/boat, 30-40 min. Covers side canals, quieter areas, Kezhi Garden approach. Better for photography.
- Combined ticket: Some piers sell "9-attraction + boat" combo ~¥100-150/person (attractions: Kezhi Garden, City God Temple, Post Office, etc.). Only worth it if you'll hit 4+ paid sites.
Cash preferred for boat pilots (many elderly). Alipay/WeChat accepted at ticket booths. Tip ¥20-50 for good pilot commentary.
Access
Metro (Best): Line 17 to Zhujiajiao (朱家角), Exit 1/2 — 5 min walk to town entrance. Line 17 from Hongqiao Railway Station (Lines 2/10/17) ~30 min. From People's Square: Line 2 → Hongqiao → Line 17 (~60 min total).
DiDi/Taxi: ~¥150-200 from city center, 60-75 min (traffic dependent). Drop at "Zhujiajiao Ancient Town North Gate."
Tour bus: Daily from Shanghai Stadium / People's Square ~¥80-120 round-trip. Fixed schedule, less flexible.

Local Pro-Tips
- Weekday morning (arrive 9:30 AM): Tour groups arrive ~10:30. You get 60 min of near-empty lanes for photos.
- Line 17 is the game-changer. Before 2024, it was a 90-min bus ride. Now 50 min metro. Do not take a tour bus unless you want commentary.
- Boat negotiation: Walk past the first two piers. Prices drop, pilots more relaxed. Target ~¥120 short, ~¥200 long for 4-6 people.
- Food strategy: Skip North Street restaurants (tourist pricing). Eat at canalside family spots on side lanes — braised pork, freshwater shrimp, rice cakes. ~¥60-100/person.
- Kezhi Garden: Worth the ¥20. The rockery cave system is unique — you can climb through. Cool in summer.
- Photography: Fangsheng Bridge best from boat (low angle). North Street lanterns best at dusk (5-6 PM winter, 7-8 PM summer). Side canals best morning light.
- Combine with: Oriental Pearl Tower (Line 2 from Hongqiao), Shanghai Museum East (Line 17 → Line 16).
Best Time to Visit
Spring (Mar-May): Wisteria on trellises, comfortable temps, waterside dining pleasant.
Autumn (Oct-Nov): Clear skies, golden light on white walls, best photography.
Summer: Hot, lotus in Kezhi Garden, evening boat rides cool.
Winter: Fewest tourists, stark beauty, warm snacks (roasted sweet potato, hot soy milk).
